Network Administrator

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Administrator activities associated with  equipment will be performed in accordance with processes and procedures found in the appropriate ALOG referenced above.

Network Administrators are expected to perform network maintenance and monitoring, firewall maintenance and operations, network appliance maintenance and operations, switch maintenance, network time synchronization, backup/restore/disaster recovery, and user support. This section further expands the general definition of Network Administrators into specific tasks that are common across the various sites to support the ALOU, CPE, and SOU.

The ability to obtain and maintain an active secret clearance with an investigation completed in the last 6 years is required. A Security+ certification (or equivalent-GSEC, CAP, CASP, CISM, CISSP, CISA, etc.) is required within 60 days of starting a position.

Junior-Senior level opportunities available, salary ranges are based on education/certifications and years of experience.

All positions require standard business travel usually once every 6 months for 1-3 weeks to other US base locations.

Network Maintenance and Monitoring

• Troubleshoot connectivity between SOU and the
• Maintain and update system firewalls and maintain TCP/IP networks and information on network topologies.
• Monitor hardware/software logs, software events, user activity, resource access, and provide network monitoring and intrusion detection.
• Provide overall onsite network support and maintenance of internal networks.

• Ensure network devices comply with site regulations at all times.
• Interact with local base network communications group to assist in troubleshooting and manage planned network outages and upgrades.

• Analyze port and replace or reconfigure device when necessary.
• Perform software upgrade or install new firmware when required.

• Ensure software updates and firmware upgrades are tested prior to final installation into .
• Network Time Synchronization
• Synchronize the time on all network devices and coordinate with the System Administrator when necessary.
• Backup/Restore/Disaster Recovery
• Maintain images and backups for the configuration data and operating systems of all network appliances that fall under his/her jurisdiction.
• Institute risk management strategy by pre-planning solutions for unexpected failure scenarios.

User Support

• Serves as primary point of contact (POC) for any network related issues.
• Coordinate network configuration changes with the System Administrator and DBA to reduce impact to other  sites and the end users.

Network Administrators perform software and hardware management on the  computer network, which includes controlling, planning, allocating, deploying, coordinating, and monitoring the resources of the  networks. Network administration tasks include but are not limited to: network planning, frequency allocation, predetermined traffic routing to support load balancing, cryptographic key distribution authorization, configuration management, fault management, security management, and performance management. Network Administrators require strong working knowledge of layer 2 and 3 networking along with production and administrative procedures for highly visible Information Technology (IT) enabled Activities.

Skills & Knowledge Set

The Network Administrator requires a particular set of skills and knowledge to adequately perform network administration, including network security, protection, and availability. While some of these skills and knowledge set may already exist in the designated administrator, these skills are typically developed through a training curriculum or by OJT.

• Demonstrated PC and networking skills, including NetMeeting, conferencing servers.
• Working knowledge of reading blueprints and wiring server racks

Dependencies

The Network Administrator works with other administrators onsite and at other sites to provide and ensure complete oversight of the  databases, network, and system. The Network Administrator coordinates with the System Administrator and DBA in determining optimal time or period to perform network configuration changes. The Network Administrator assists the System Administrators in monitoring system performance by verifying traffic transmission occurs to and from the by the correct means with acceptable performance. The Network Administrator also will be proficient with the client processes and procedures and how they apply to a remote network campus. There will also be a clear understanding of Corporate Information Security (CIS) Information Assurance and Protection.
